I like using my skills to do surprise community projects for various discords. During the holidays in 2024, the streamer Aurelia Cassiopeia did a community watch along of the Santa Clause trilogy, where she mentioned she collected Snow Globes.
She also loves cats, gacha games, and her lore is that she's an alien from outer space.
I decided to spend the week before xmas throwing together a quick game for the community to participate in.
The idea was simple - a 3D snow globe with some hidden kitties to find. When found, they would unlock gacha-pulls, and unlock messages from community members.
I wanted to make a portfolio piece with ThreeJS and Vue, so this was perfect.
I modeled a cute 3d house scene, including many of the communities discord profile pictures in the windows. I loaded it in ThreeJS as a GLB and programmed a simple ray-caster system to click on the hidden kitties. I made all the UI layer completely in Vue3.
The whole project came together quickly. I reached out to my musician friend and he cooked up a couple of great songs.
I sent out a google form to many community members to collect thoughts & wishes, and finished the day before Christmas.
I shared the project with her and she played it live on stream - it went great!
A year went by, and I decided to revisit the project yet again. All the code was there, so really I just needed a new Snow Globe and some new community wishes. I got the ball rolling. Reli often talks about her love for Taco Bell, so this time I thought it would be fun to model a mini Taco Bell snow globe.
Once again the community came through and everyone enjoyed the experience.
