Cheap USB N64 Controller

Cheap USB N64 Controller

Recently I went through a N64 nostalgia phase. I picked up a few different PC-compatible N64-alike controllers, and this will be the first review in a series of 3. While this wasn't the first one I got, it's my least favorite, so we'll start here.

While I just said it's my "least favorite", it's not bad at all. This came up in my Amazon recommends for only $10. I had to pick it up just to see what the deal was. It's a USB controller roughly styled on the iconic Hori pad, but it's not identically the same. Anyway, it feels like a $10 controller, but it's not bad - it works fine. It feels pretty good to hold and the face buttons and joy sticks work well, but the plastic feels on the cheaper side and the shoulder buttons really miss the mark. Because it's a two handled controller, the iconic "Z" button has been moved to the L2/R2 spots on both sides.

One of the other awkward features of this controller is that it keeps the area for the rumble-pak / memory-pak slot, but doesn't actually have a connector and isn't used for anything. A bit odd, but doesn't really get in the way.

Overall, it's the best bang-for-your-buck if you want a quick hit of nostalgia with N64 emulators. But you can do better, so see the next article in the series!
